BG Staffing September Jobs Report: Nobody's Leaving, and That Changes How You Hire

29,000 jobs. That's all the U.S. economy added in September, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics described every major industry as "little changed." Then came the revisions. July and August were cut by a combined 60,000 jobs, pushing July into negative territory.

Quiet? Absolutely. But tucked inside the industry tables is a number every property management team should circle. Rental and Leasing Services added 2,700 jobs, its best month since March.

BG Staffing September Jobs Report

The Headline Numbers

The unemployment rate came in at 4.2 percent, with 7.1 million people unemployed. It has stayed in a tight range of 4.1 to 4.3 percent since March. Steady, but not exactly energetic.

Health care added 17,000 jobs, about half its usual monthly pace. Construction added 11,000, led by nonresidential specialty trade contractors. Manufacturing gained 9,000 and is now up 72,000 since its December 2025 low.

Financial activities, the sector that houses real estate, slipped by 7,000. It's now down 129,000 since its May 2025 peak, with most of that loss in insurance.

What This Means for Real Estate and Rental and Leasing

Rental and Leasing Services added 2,700 jobs in September, bringing the industry to 574,900 workers. The broader Real Estate and Rental and Leasing sector rose by 500, as real estate itself shed 2,000 positions.

We'll be honest about the full picture. Rental and Leasing is still down 1,500 jobs from a year ago, so one good month doesn't erase a soft year. But after a summer of small gains and small losses, it's the clearest sign of movement we've seen in months. Communities are hiring again while most of the economy stands still.

Reading Between the Lines

Here's the twist. Our sector is hiring, but almost nobody is leaving.

The latest BLS job openings data shows openings in Real Estate and Rental and Leasing fell from 95,000 in July to 50,000 in August. Quits dropped to 22,000, a rate of just 0.9 percent, down from 39,000 a year earlier. And workers in the sector now stay with their employer a median of 4.6 years, up from 4.2 years in 2024.

Translation? The leasing consultants and maintenance techs you want most are already employed, and they're staying put. They aren't scrolling job boards. They're waiting for the right conversation.

Wages tell a similar story. Average hourly earnings rose just 5 cents to $37.81, up 3.0 percent over the year. Temporary help services also dipped by 10,900 jobs, a reminder that many employers are still cautious about adding hands.

"A quiet jobs report doesn't mean a quiet talent market," said Kelly Brown, Co-CEO and President of BG Staffing. "Our sector added jobs while most of the economy stood still, and the people property teams want most aren't leaving their current roles. The best candidates won't come looking for you. The operators filling roles this fall are the ones with a staffing partner already working their market."

What Smart Property Management Teams Are Doing Right Now

When nobody quits, your next great hire is working somewhere else today. That changes the playbook. Posting a job and waiting won't cut it anymore.

The teams staying ahead are building a bench before winter maintenance season and year-end renewals hit. Flexible staffing, from temp to temp-to-perm to permanent placement, lets you cover a sudden vacancy or a turnover spike without overcommitting in a slow economy. And a partner with a network of proven leasing, maintenance and groundskeeping talent can reach candidates who will never see your listing.

For job seekers, the message is just as clear. Our industry is adding jobs while others hold still, and temp-to-hire roles remain one of the fastest ways into a permanent property management career.

At BG Staffing, we're here to help both employers and candidates navigate this transition. Whether you're looking to build your team or your career, we've got the insights and expertise to guide your next move. Connect with us today!
