To celebrate World Youth Skills Day, we’re spotlighting our team members for serving to upskill youth in their communities, thereby creating future leaders! World Youth Skills Day The United Nations established this day in 2014 to raise awareness about equipping young people with skills for employment, entrepreneurship, and the workforce. Our vision at BGSF is to connect people to opportunities and transform lives, which we believe starts with our youth. Junior Achievement JA INSPIRE Autumn Souto, Delivery Specialist for BGSF, and Jenna Coleman, Managing Director for BGSF, participated in JA of Greater Boston’s inaugural JA Inspire. This was a career exploration fair for eighth-grade students throughout Boston and beyond. Read below to learn more about Autumn’s experience at JA Inspire: “Middle Schoolers from underrepresented communities in the Greater Boston area had an opportunity to meet with people from a wide variety of industries, offering them a glimpse into possible career paths. Engaging with these bright and motivated kids was amazing! Students saw people who looked like them, grew up in similar communities and family dynamics, and could relate. Representation matters more than people realize.” The goal was to teach students about career opportunities through an interactive educational experience with local employers. JA BOLD Girls Summit LaKia Ross, Sales Director for BGSF, served as a mentor for the Junior Achievement of Dallas’ BOLD Girls Summit. Young ladies from area high schools enjoyed a presentation on Breaking Barriers, toured the TWU campus, and attended breakout sessions. Session topics included wellness, building wealth, and creating a business. The goal was for youth to gain the knowledge the skills needed to plan for their futures and consider how they will “lead boldly” in the future. JA Office Warriors Our team members competed in the Junior Achievement of Central Maryland’s JA Office Warriors competition, a wacky office games event where companies network, connect, and most importantly inspire JA students. The goal was to offer active learning opportunities for how to be warriors in their own pursuit of the American Dream. - June 2023 BGSF Jobs Report: Modest Growth Amid Mixed Indicators
The June 2023 jobs report reflects a mixed picture of the US labor market, with modest job growth and shifting dynamics among different business sectors. While nonfarm payrolls increased by 209,000, marking a considerable drop from the previous month, small and midsize businesses spearheaded the job creation, whereas large businesses experienced a decline in employment. Additionally, the unemployment rate saw a slight decrease, but a broader measure of joblessness increased. Despite these fluctuations, wages showed a positive trend, surpassing expectations with a 4.4% year-on-year increase. Job Creation by Business Size Small and midsize businesses emerged as the main contributors to job growth in June. Small businesses added 299,000 jobs, demonstrating their resilience and entrepreneurial spirit. Midsize businesses also fared well, creating 183,000 jobs. However, large businesses experienced a setback, shedding 8,000 jobs during the same period. With a downward revision of May's numbers, June's total of 209,000 jobs was the slowest month for job creation since December 2020 when payrolls fell by 268,000. However, this decrease would have been even more pronounced without the boost in government jobs. Government employment increased by 60,000, with the majority coming from state and local levels. - Empower Hour: Celebrating Juneteenth
We recently celebrated Juneteenth with our African American and Allies Employee Resource Group leading an Empower Hour to educate our teams on the importance of this holiday. Over (110) team members attended this powerful educational hour! Our Empower Hour began with a short video about the history of Juneteenth, its relevance today, and why we celebrate this day of freedom. Knowledge breaks were featured, including the history of the Juneteenth flag and its symbolism. One of the most impactful portions of this hour was the breakout groups, where team members had an open discussion about the value of Juneteenth education in schools and how this education would promote more inclusive workplace environments. We shared our viewpoints with one another, taking the time to connect and intentionally learn through dialogue. In our second breakout group, we explored ideas and ways to appreciate and bring awareness to Juneteenth, and shared if we have in the past or plan to attend any Juneteenth celebrations this year. Several team members shared events in their cities to further engage with one another and foster inclusivity within their communities. Our goal was to drive awareness by engaging in dialogue and learning opportunities. In doing so, we dismissed assumptions, promoted inclusivity, and walked away with increased knowledge. The sharing of experiences, perspectives, and stories from our colleagues helped build stronger connections by creating a workplace culture that values and respects everyone. We developed our DE&I Council, VIIBE (Voices Inspiring Inclusion, Belonging, & Equity), in 2020 and introduced three Employee Resource Groups in 2023.
